Home Automation: Smartphone Controlled Bathtub

After a long day at work, coming home to a hot bath is a real treat. What’s even better is when it’s ready to go as soon as you walk in the door.

I have a dream of one day owning a completely automated house, where everything can be managed directly from my smartphone. As a long time fan of home automation, this particular example caught my eye. It’s a brilliant DIY (do-it-yourself) project that uses network controls to manage bathtub filling and emptying remotely.

More Details:

According to the DIY guy who made this, the system is centralized around a Loxone mini-server plus an extension. This equals out to a total of 16 relay switches (16 different things in the house controlled by by the server) so the bathtub isn’t his only item automated in the house, other projects include:

  • 1. bath – valve for water feed
  • 2. bath – valve for drain
  • 3. electric lock on front door
  • 4. one power circuit that all appliances that use standby power are plugged into – this shuts off overnight
  • 5. front porch light
  • 6. rear porch light
  • 7. bedroom 1 light
  • 8. bedroom 2 light
  • 9. bedroom 3 light
  • 10. office light
  • 11. bathroom light
  • 12. standard lamp in the lounge
  • 13. led strip in kitchen
  • 14. led strip in bar
  • 15. powered gate
  • 16. heat transfer unit
  • Even though the full instructions aren’t available for anything but the bath tub (so far) this small project is a real inspiration for home-tech DIY’ers. For those interested in even more details, Bayden answered several questions over a reddit thread.
